The image shows as large light brown area the city of Sao Paulo (middle top side). Located on a plateau of the Serra do Mar, it is the largest city in Brazil and also the centre for foreign banking and financial operations, moreover it is the commercial centre for products (particularly coffee). Along the coast, north-east of Sao Paulo, is visible (top right image), the second largest city of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. 

 

This Medium Level 1 Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) was acquired on 13 November 2006 (orbit 24597) over the Strait of Gibraltar (middle upper image). It is a narrow passage that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean.

 

This Medium Level 1 Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) was acquired on 06 November 2006 (orbit 24498) along the border between the province of Buenos Aires and the Republic of Uruguay. The image shows also, as a small light brown area (partially covered by clouds) Montevideo. Located on the coast just northeast of the delta of Rio de la Plata, it is city and capital of Uruguay. To the east, on the bank of the river, lies Buenos Aires, city and capital of Argentina Republic, visible (centre upper left) as large light brown area.

The image shows also (middle lower as bright area) along the Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans city, a major port on the Mississippi River.

This Meris image was acquired on 05 September 2006 (orbit23607) over the Caspian Sea. Located in southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, it is the largest saltwater lake in the world by area and volume. The image also shows the Aral Sea. This Lake lies to the north-east of the Caspian Sea and it is the second saltwater lake in central Asia.

This Medium Level 1 Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) was acquired on 22 August 2006 (orbit 23408) over the central northeastern Italian Republic (Italy). It is a Southern European country. Italy consists predominantly of a large peninsula with a distinctive boot shape that extends into the Mediterranean Sea.

 

This Meris image was acquired on 18 August 2006 (orbit 23222) over Greece, a country situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. Greece consists of a mountainous and craggy mainland jutting out into the sea at the southern end of the Balkans.  The Peloponnesus peninsula is separated from the mainland by the canal of Corinth. It has numerous islands, the Dodecanese and the Cycladic groups of the Aegean Sea as well as the Ionian Sea islands. Athens is the capital and largest city (middle right as large bright color), with its port, Piraeus, located to the south-west on the Saronic Gulf (Aegean Sea); it forms a unified metropolitan region.
